The single most valuable sports card available today is widely believed to be the Honus Wagner T206 tobacco card, produced between 1909 and 1911 in a limited run. Few cards were printed, and today fewer than 60 cards are thought to exist in various states of quality. Of course, an old, rare card would not be worth the record $3.12 million the card sold for in 2016 if Wagner were not such an accomplished figure in Major League Baseball (MLB).

Wagner began his career as a player in 1987 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and went on to contest all of his 21 seasons with the Pirates. He finished his career, which spanned nearly 2,800 regular season games, with a 0.328 batting average and a 130.8 wins above replacement (WAR) rating. He is best remembered for his eight batting titles and 1909 World Series championship. After retiring, Wagner coached the Pirates from 1933 until 1951.
The world record Wagnus sales was made through Goldin Auctions, surpassing a record set by a different copy of the card in 2007, which sold for $2.8 million.
