A 2024 KBCD News Channel article reported that Superbowl 2024 impacted sports trading card purchases, taking off in February. According to the article, investors and collectors hunted cards featuring the next Tom Brady.

One sports card trading seller and buyer reported an increase in business, with many people searching for the next great player featured.

Brock Purdy, quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, saw increased demand.

Purdy ascended into the limelight despite the NFL drafting him last in 2022 to starting quarterback two years later. His rise in the league has sent trading card purchases and sales into a frenzy.

A third-party grading and authentication company stated that Purdy’s card received the most authentication requests. Other requested players included CJ Stroud, Patrick Mahomes, Anthony Richardson, Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Bryce Young, Justin Herbert, and Tua Tagovailoa.

In the case of Purdy, one of his cards sold for an estimated $125,700 in February. In December 2023, another sold for $186,000. The prices show that some believe Purdy will become the next Brady.
