With more than 30 years of experience selling sports cards, Mike and Mark Skerbe own Michigan-based SSS Sports Cards. Selling cards from 1975 and earlier, SSS Sports Cards ensures cards are in as good condition as possible, generating worthwhile investments for collectors. In November 2020, a 1952 Mickey Mantle baseball card, manufactured by Topps, sold for $5.2 million, the highest price for a sports card up to that time.
Purchased by actor Rob Gough, the line of baseball cards containing Mantle’s undersold upon initial release, so Topps dumped excess supply into the Atlantic Ocean. Since then, the card became highly desirable to collectors, especially in higher-grade condition. Rated a nine out of 10 on Professional Sports Authenticators’ scale at time of sale, it was one of only six copies of Mantle’s card in this condition.
Gough’s purchase, performed by PWCC Marketplace, topped the previous record holder, a 2009 Mike Trout card manufactured by Bowman, which sold for $3.9 million in August 2020. Gough’s card previously sold for $2.88 million in 2018, when acquired by NFL player Evan Mathis.
